Why Polio Virus is endemic in Pakistan

Pakistan who says is not among the developed countries, when it comes to corruption, loot, plunder, crimes and killings we are more ahead of most developed countries and regions in the world.

We have no time to provide clean drinking water to the masses, as it is the job of underdeveloped countries to provide such luxuries. We don’t want to have qualitative educational and health institutes as it doesn’t suit our own standards. We don’t want to fight many diseases of many types; if Poliomyelitis has been eliminated from the face of earth, so what, we have our own diseases to fight.

We want to fight those who are fighting against Poliomyelitis. This is the biggest and largest filth we have in our minds, and it seems to eradicate the Poliomyelitis is only the job of government and few health institutes and dedicated workers who have sacrificed their lives for this great cause and rest it looks like it is none other’s business to support this critical cause, to come out and be helping hand in this essential task, mainly media and Molivis. Media and Molivis’ role can do a great service to our religion and humanity at great level regarding this.

The role of Parhi Likhi (Literate) media in this connection is very deplorable and condemnable. we have more marriage/wedding programs in the morning shows daily but hardly we see such programs even once in a month or in months which require our attention and are of great importance to this cause. Contrary we have seen such reports that show a child died of getting polio drops, such news are reported often in print and electronic media and these news stories cause great harm to polio drive in the country and their effect is felt more in Pakhtun /tribal and refugee dominated areas which are already critical to handle.

Media is like flammable fire it catches and spreads the negative news (fire) more easily than the positive one. And question is very critical that why we see, read every other day the cases of expiry of kids reported being died after having the polio drops?

Though such news could not be true at all but it might not be false too. There might be something wrong? Otherwise why such incidents are occurring and reported in the media?

This is a challenge and same time responsibility of health bodies/taskforces who are working for polio drive. These bodies, government and other institutes must come together to take this issue seriously and should come with clear solution to this once and for all. As reporting of such cases have damaged the efforts of polio workers, doctors, teams who are working very hard day and night to eradicate the roots of this long lasting disease which already has been removed almost 70 percent from the parts of the earth. We should remember Pakistan is one of the three countries in the world categorized, “Endemic” by the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI)

Though this looks very difficult task but it is possible once we take the rational and realistic measures and approach to this matter. I have a good experience of such issues being a past research worker in projects at Aga Khan University. I am an eye-witness to polio teams working in Pakhtun and Afghan refugees dominated areas and can share what I stumble upon from time to time to see such situations. I feel it’s important to share my views as following.

Before I go to suggest some important points which I believe would be useful to this cause, let’s see the two scenarios of Polio Teams on the ground.

(1)

Al-Asif Square is mostly Pakhtun and Afghan refugees populated area in Karachi. This is a stark truth that working in Pakhtun and Afghan refugee areas is an upheaval task, working in such areas is not so easy and really a risk taking job. These areas require our serious attention and interest with intervention and involvement of local people to work for this cause. Otherwise the goal of eradication of polio from Pakistan will remain only a dream to dream.

What I saw one day in Al-Asif Square? Sitting on stairs of the 4th floor outside a flat, a female worker was filling in a sheet form but with false entries, and another female worker who looked senior was advising her co-worker do it as I am advising you, otherwise they (officers) will enquire us why we did leave this unfilled, unregistered, write the kids have been given drops orally too in the next column. When people would keep on refusing and workers would keep on tampering data, we would have great number of missed children and this will hamper the efforts, we will be starting from zero point again and again.

Now, one wonders why this compelled team workers to enter the false data?

Reason:

Being an ex worker at AKU with research teams, I have noticed often our workers bring false data from the field but the seniors don’t bother to check it the way it should be checked. They just rely on whatever a worker is fetching is all true and accurate.

We don’t realize how people get annoyed and complain when a research worker/data collector knock on their doors with volley of repetitious questionnaires and taking their time with pesky questions regarding household, incomes, medical history and other socio-economic related data.  Moreover when you request and take their lab samples, lecture them on this and that, then follow-ups and same cycle of same activities annoy people to such extent that sometimes we see the cases of violence and abuses hurled at teams. Such episodes lead a worker to fill in the questionnaire with false or same data and this happens more often in such cases when a worker present a true picture of the event or incident in weekly or monthly meetings. Rather he should be listened carefully, sympathetically and must be provided support and guidance how to handle participants or subjects in the field, contrary he/she is either reprimanded or pressurized to such level by his/her seniors/boss that he becomes compel to do what others do every day.

(2)

Another time a group of senior and junior workers including doctors were in same area, knocking doors and pleading people please bring you children for polio drops to take. But people were refusing or saying when a doctor (referring probably to the GPS, doctors or quacks in their area where they frequently go for treatment) would ask us to do this otherwise we won’t. A doctor with team was asking a woman I am the doctor, and see we have cold boxes to keep polio vaccines safe so please bring your child to administer him polio drops, but no avail.

Suggestions:

  1. Now when Islamic scholars have declared that polio vaccine is safe and halal all over the world, so this is not enough that few religious scholars are appearing in television advertisements requesting people to get your children immunized, they should come out of their cozy environment and must visit their neighborhoods, preach for this in Jumma sermons with great emphasis and advise the local mosque and maddressah Molivis and administration to go door to door with Polio Teams, ask people to cooperate with the teams and get their children vaccinated to fight this crippling disease and menace which has been cleared off from the most parts of the earth except few countries like ours.

  1. Media must play a positive role for this critical health issue, run advertisement free of costs for this cause during prime time hours, must show some programs at least 3 or 4 times in a week. Media should also avoid such false news which are badly impacting the thinking of masses and creating misconception. This is highly negative impact it does not only affect the efforts of government and health institutes but create lot of trouble for polio workers who go to filed site.

  1. Our seniors/doctors/coordinators who are just working in offices and they think they are giving a powerful presentation with PowerPoint in office is doing a great job. This is a less important job they are doing in their offices, they should go out in the field and meet people directly and know on hands what they are actually lacking regarding no response from masses. A better communication should be maintained with media persons/groups and media must be provided with facts regarding polio vaccines safety and their usage as there is lot of misconception among masses and media can play an important in this perspective.

  1. Wages of workers should be increased who are taking risk, this will not only enhance their work ability but they would also complete their job sincerely. Security must be provided to teams specially working in High Risk Areas.

  1. Data collectors/Polio workers should be recruited from the concerned areas who know the langue spoken in the area; this will be more useful to achieve the targeted goal.

  1. The best and realistic approach to this problem is to involve the local community, people, GPS, quacks, union staffs of apartments, Molivis of local mosques and other notables of community will be a great assistance to accomplish this entire project smoothly without their continuous engagement this drive won’t be successful.

“Refugees and the attitude of Twittya”

We have left behind the 2016; almost 16 years have been passed of 21st century, still more wars, more bloodshed, more violence, more crisis, more poverty, more cruelty, more corruption, more criminalization, more loot more plunder.

What the past year left for us having all these vices was the phenomenal crisis of refugees behind the ancient exoduses recorded in history. How wars create havoc…!!
By and large all exoduses are linked to religious hegemony and all manmade, very few natural. Homelessness, displacements, slavery and makeshift settlements for mass migration of human beings, this is 21st century.
It is estimated that only the refugees of Syrian civil war surrounded between 50, 00000 to 60, 00000 in recent human history and most of them received by European countries rather than Muslim ones. At macro level a muslim is enemy of another muslim, and at micro level we distribute this blame down to imperialists, colonial powers, Europeans, Americans and then, there are ours too, Sunnis and Shiites and hundreds of sects, sub sects, camps and wings, box within a box, Pandora’s Box.
Americans came for Afghans we got Afghan refugee crisis and Russians went for Syria, Syrian crisis. When bulls fight bushes have to be trampled and crushed. What wars leave for us with the entire thinkable and the unthinkable crisis, vicious cycles?
Vicious cycles of xenophobia, hatred, self-created patriotism and racial intolerance against refugees.
It is no wonder Pakistan hosts around three million Afghan refugees and there is no less number of hosts at social media sites who are xenophobic, hatemongers, so-called patriot who all belong to self proclaimed Baghariat Brigade, they don’t waste a moment to malign the Afghan refugees from time to time and no less worse is our government which extends date from date for refugee to stay or leave? In such dilemma those are the refugees who go through all the trials and tribulations of worst of kind one can possibly think of.
What brought the Sunday (January 15, 2017) Dawn Newspaper to its front page, “KP prosecution data gives lie to claims against Afghan Refugees”
The story revealed that between the 2014 to 2016, total 11,685 cases were registered and out of these only 134 involved Afghan refugees, the cases involved 23,007 accused, of which only 300 were Afghan refugees. Now one wonders who tops at crimes. Pakistanis or Afghan refugees?
I very passionately request all those Twittya who uses Twittistan for their Baghariat Brigade must read this story and wash their minds off and should know Pakistan is responsible country which abides and respects the international law simultaneously; Afghan refugees are living here under the UNHCR’s mandate.
It is also obligatory for a responsible state to protect the rights of refugees and pay a respectful way for the repatriation of refugees.

Scenes of Karachi Sea View Site

Scene -1

A week ago when I insisted a friend to come along with me and to have a visit by sea-view-side but he (because He was not She) was reluctant to go there, somehow he agreed to accompany. After a short while we were there, Karachi seaside the Arabian ocean. Sea a cheap recreational place to visit and wander. I asked the dude lets go to the seawater as I want to walk on the sea sand and soak my feet into sea water, my only desire coming here was to have a walk along side seashore, as I need relaxation and riddance from the stress and anxieties of life we accumulate in Karachi’s stressful environment every day. My friend was making a face to go to enter the salt water as horses wince the waters. I was pleading him brother what harms you to remove your shoes off and have a gentle walk along the seashore, I was confused why he is irritable and reluctant to walk down the seashore. I assured him don’t worry no one will take away our shoes or we can take our shoes with us just 15 minutes brisk walk then back to pavilion. Finally the camel came down the mountain.

Scene-2

There are beaches around the world with blue skies and blue seas, with swaying palms and pristine waters, well maintained and preserved from all kinds of the dirt and dust and they offer many luxuries to tourists, local community and public rush there in their holidays. Friends and Families, elders and kids together go and stay there and enjoy the exotic natural environment of beaches. Then there are we who go to the seas fully clad and  clothed, covered from elbows to ankles and still find ourselves besieged and blushed, victims of typical Pakistani morality. What an embarrassment!!!?

Scene -3

It really was an embarrassment and shame to see the sea. I have taken few snapshots and recorded clips to show you how worse is the situation of Karachi main sea view side with broken discolored benches and umbrella shades made few years ago, cracked and patched pavements and of all the littered sea area. You can see the scattered objects and rubbish on sandy area. Not to talk of foul odor. Someone say this is result of new construction alongside the sea view side, builder mafias, gutter lines gushing directly to sea waters and adding up free flow of factories chemical waste.

Who makes the sea dirty?

We….we drop the bags, empty cans and plastic bottles carelessly and leave rubbish scattered everywhere there.

Who leave this chemical waste to seawater?

We (factories and construction mafias)….we living in lush areas, driving in best luxury cars, working under cool office environment and when it comes to flush out….we have none better place other than sea.

Who is more negligent on this side?

We the government, local authorities, civic bodies accomplice with public to drop the garbage everywhere as this is their own land…… real estate owners, as they think all land is properties of their fathers so why not high rise and all bowl movement to seawater…..rest makes most the worst of all things are our industrialists the so called warrantors and guarantors of our country’s progress and prosperity. They have license to kill, killing human beings, species, plants, animals and fuck up the ecosystem of seas.

Drop Scene

My friend told me in last that this was the reason he was reluctant to go to seaside as he had already been there a month ago with his family and they returned home nauseated in the evening after visiting the sea.

The Problem of Kashmir

Kashmir remains a nuclear flashpoint…bilateral efforts have been failed for 70 years….international community intercedes forcefully and promote a peaceful solution the Kashmir dispute…so son so, on, writes the Munir Akram veteran columnist and an authority on foreign affairs in Sunday Dawn Newspaper.

My point is who will come and help to resolve this issue?

USA          Still number one country and most powerful when it comes to veto, decide, who to help against whom, who to make and who to break and who to mend is no more a friend of Pakistan and realistically it never been ever a friend to Pakistan . A country which lives by interests, so called national interest, it has only one principal what pleases America and what displeases it more, she sees who are on the side of pleasing America.

So America is tilted to India this time and India is flanked by America to enhance and establish its political, economic and strategic interests to its neighbors and generally in South Asia and stand upright in front of rising China.

Will it come to resolve Kashmir Problem??

Russia            The country is not so powerful the way America is, but still it blockades, hurdles, and stops America from doing what Russia wants to undo, Russia is dragging cleverly USA to old cold war again rhetorically and by poking the Europe with close ties with America and is big player in middle eastern war theatre, has good relationships with Arab countries. Russia also has geo-political interests in Arab world, oily, wealthy and rich gulf region is windfall to Russia as well as they are for USA. Pakistan has played against Russia in Afghan war and recently the ice is melting between two countries, but the shrewd and cunning Putin administration is far away to back Kashmir issue in favor of Kashmiris or Pakistan.

So who will come to solve this old issue?

China        The philosophical, contemplative and launch fierce offensive against enemies when needed otherwise go steady like turtle has been the strategy of Ancient China. China is pretty clever and is on the way of founding and establishing its economic, political and strategic relations in South Asian region and making its presence peacefully in European orbit and try to avoid confrontational fight with USA and others. China thinks it wise that more you are economically sound more you would be able to defend and safeguard your interest in the field of geo-politics and at battle ground too. Though we have a cliché about China being ‘time-tested friend’ of Pakistan and in recent times it has invested billions of dollars in CPEC –led development projects and is heading to other south Asian countries with purpose of drawing them near to china periphery, boosting their emerging economies and consolidating its own position in the region. China like other countries is well aware of  Pakistan’s two parallel government setups, one a political setup and other one of establishment and both the parallel setups have always been at odds with each other in key foreign affair matters, as the establishment in the days of Musharraf was far away from the Kashmir issue and had put it in the cold storage, but the present establishment  seems to be pro-Kashmir, so once the Pakistan has the same value and importance regarding Kashmir issue by all state institutions, less possible  China would come and  play a role in Kashmir issue. China would support Pakistan somehow diplomatically but would never be the part of conflagration anytime.

So the Kashmir imbroglio needs a deep study and clear strategy based on ground realities.

{{…….Shikarpur and Smita Patil…….}}

I don’t remember what was the year, may be 1984 or 1985, but a journey by train from Radhan Station to Shikarpur (Sindh) was very strange and eerie, a lengthy travelling undeniably, lengthy tracks, railway crossings, signals and brief stops at every station and the noises of hawkers, finally Shikarpur.
Days were of chilly winter, Shikarpur being near to Quetta was all cold and frosty in the morning, freezing weather. The place was a nursing quarter of Tara Chand Hospital, a beautiful edifice itself where my cousin was a staff nurse, 4 roomed quarter house was a place of accommodation for all partners from other towns of Sindh. They were studying and working there. Two gentle guys were like our official guides wherever we like to go, visit, buy things and take a round to station in the evening, they were our best companions.

Those were the days of VCR, big black cassettes and a TV set. Taking all these things on rent was a great luxury and romance to enjoy the Hindi movies in those days. One day those friends arranged a TV and VCR to watch movies and it was there I watched “Shakti” a Hindi movie starring Dilip Kumar, Amitabh Bachan and Smita Patil, we often used to pronounce her name like Sameeta Patail, what a naive of spelling names by reading filmy posters in Urdu.

I don’t remember exactly whether I had seen Smita Patil’s other pictures before or later to that movie. I can remember the ‘Aaj Rapat Gayu To Humey Na Bhulayo’ ‘Hum Ne Sanam Ko Khat’ ‘Dikhae Diye Yu’ and other memorable songs picturized on her.

What an age it was, every heroine was my heroine, a dream world of lover and fantasy of infatuated adolescent. I being a romantic soul was in love with her as well. Her acting, her songs, her attractive saucy looks and glances were all to romanticize the bygone heroine.

Today when I read ‘Star power’ a review on a book on Smita Patil by Maumun Adil in Sunday dawn newspaper it brought me back to the memories of past, Shikarpur…..railway tracks….Smita Patil and love for her like I have had for every heroine 🙂

“Not a Hollywood but Syria. .!”

How miserable are the streets of Syria,

In our part of the world we pronounce it SHAM,

Means evening, “Sham e Ghariban” the evening of desolation,

It’s not a cinema hall,

Not a scene of Hollywood war or horror movie,

Not the sound waves of dolby stereo,

Which strikes at your ears,

But Syria can provide you all,

The real scenes. …..!

Real scenes of horror and war,

Real scenes of noisy, panicky ambulance’s siren,

Honking horns of taxis at borders to cross,

Yells and wails of depressed and departed souls,

A sequence of scenes……distinct narrative,

So these are not the scenes of Hollywood horror movie……but the real scenes of Syria,

Streets of desolation…. corpses and haunting nightmares,

Scenes of crumbling walls….broken window glasses,

Pools of blood and pieces of flesh in every corner….streets of Syria….!

You want to eat, no foods,

You want to drink, no water,

You want to weep, no tears,

How distant they are….?

The words of “Humanitarian assistance and aid”

Refugees crisis…..truce and civil war,

We are here to help Syria – Russia

We are here to protect Syrians – America

True and false,

Game of true and false,

They are the contractors of big companies,

Industries of weaponry,

The best and loyal contractors. …so loyal like a faithful dog,

Contractors for gun lobbyists,

Contractors – license to kill,

Killing reptiles, crawling, climbers and all insects of all kinds,

Then contracts of dumping bodies,

Destroying buildings,

Damaging roads and devastating POPULATIONS. …!

Our Best and Loyal Contractors…..Russia and America. ….!

They don’t take a penny to protect and help you !
